In an attractive Lakeland village, this traditional guest house is recommended as 'one of the best bargains around'. Its elevated position gives it 'superb views' over Derwentwater. The owners, Bruce and Pauline Jackson, proud of having been born locally, are keen to advise visitors about the area. The decor in the Edwardian house is traditional and 'the rooms are spotlessly clean'. The garden has 'a profusion of flowers, which appear on the tables'. Mr Jackson, the chef, serves 'a sensible menu of excellent food, mainly with local produce', some of it home-grown, eg, black pudding salad, poached egg, baby beetroot; smoked haddock, broad beans, pancetta and butter sauce. Guests are asked at breakfast to choose their dishes for dinner at 7 pm. 'In a week's stay nothing was repeated.' Breakfast has fruit compotes and cereals; full English and lighter options. There is good walking all around. (R Postlethwaite, Peter R Appleyard)
