Lynnfield Hotel

Review

There are 'lovely views over Kirkwall and the bay' from this hotel in Orkney's capital. 'Tucked away behind a housing development', it is run by owner Malcolm Stout ('laid-back, helpful') with Lorna Reid. Their mainly local staff are 'friendly'. 'Our room was huge, with a half-tester bed, armchairs, large TV, walk-in closet, spa bath and big shower.' All the 'very comfortable' rooms have free Wi-Fi. The 'good-sized' residents' lounge has 'comfortable sofas' and 'well-stocked bookcases'. Coffee and 'home-made sweeties' are taken here after dinner. The restaurant, with its whisky theme, faces the water. Visitors this year thought it 'outstanding'. 'Fish and seafood dishes particularly delicious', eg, scallops on jewelled couscous and roast red pepper sauce. 'The varied wine list has some inexpensive bottles.' The Highland Park Distillery is adjacent; twenty of its malts are served in the small bar. From October to March, a six-course 'Lynnfield Lux' gourmet dinner is held on several Friday evenings. (Mary Hewson, David and Judy Stewart)
