The Feathers

Review

Owned by David Elliston and managed by Mary Diggins, this 'fascinating' half-timbered 16th-century inn is 'part of the social scene' of this historic market town. Its car park is reached through a narrow alleyway from the High Street. It has a 'nice, old-fashioned' Reception area, and a beamed lounge. Guests' bags are carried to their bedroom. Some rooms are on the second floor, reached up a 'characterful' staircase (no lift). 'Ours had beamed walls washed in yellow. Period charm meant uneven floors and one step up to and then down into a large bathroom whose floor had clearly never seen a spirit level. Everything was well kept.' Double glazing keeps out exterior noise. Of the two eating places, Fuggles brasserie has a 'varied and well-executed menu' including perhaps casserole of local game. Quills, the restaurant, which looks over the town, serves more sophisticated dishes like duck breast with girolles and red wine jus. Meals are accompanied by 'excellent, not overpriced wines'. Service is 'extremely friendly'. 'Well-presented' breakfasts include 'good full English'. Summer meals can be served in the garden. Also liked: the absence of muzak, and the leisure centre. (RC, and others)
