Verzon House

Review

In a hamlet outside the market town, this handsome Georgian farmhouse (1790) stands in large grounds with uninterrupted views to the Malvern hills. It has been refurbished by Peter and Audrey Marks, experienced hoteliers; their daughter, Jane, is the manageress. 'No expense has been spared on the furnishings and rooms; they are modern, not traditional, no sign of chintz,' says a regular Guide reporter. 'All very comfortable; staff were attentive.' The building has original cornices, an inlaid staircase, open fires. Each bedroom is named after a local apple variety; each has its own style; all have fruit, sweets, and a fridge with water, apple juice and fresh milk. On fine days, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner can be taken on the brasserie terrace. The new Chef Jason Orsi cooks 'first-class' modern American and European dishes, and has also developed a wonderful touch with tapas.  Breakfast has 'the best' scrambled eggs. Weddings and parties are catered for. (Richard Baker)
