Sheedy's

Review

In neat grounds in a town on the edge of the Burren (a limestone landscape rich in unusual plant life and historic sites), this yellow building has been owned by John Sheedy's family since the 18th century. He and his wife, Martina, run 'a very friendly but efficient ship', say recent visitors. 'It fully lived up to its outstanding reputation.' Bedrooms, in the main house and a modern extension, are 'well cared for'. 'Ours was spacious, cool, decorated in excellent taste.' Martina Sheedy is the 'hands-on, charming' manageress. Her husband is 'an accomplished cook', using fresh local ingredients for his modern dishes, eg, confit of duck leg, celeriac salad, pickled plums; baked fillet of hake, orzo pasta with crab, red pepper sauce. There's 'wonderful, delicious' food in the bar, too. Breakfast, served at table, has 'real' juice, home-made preserves, good teas, unusual cooked dishes. The Aran Islands and the Cliffs of Moher are nearby. (GLD)
