The Hand at Llanarmon

Review

'Charming welcome, comfortable room, beautiful views,' writes a visitor in 2009. Returnees liked their 'splendidly refurbished' bathroom and the new dining room furniture, and endorsed their earlier comment: 'Owner/managers Martin and Gaynor De Luchi have strong ideas of what a hotel should be, and have achieved a well-deserved success. The Hand plays a valuable role in the community.' This down-to-earth, 'unpretentious' old inn stands at the head of a pretty valley beneath the Berwyn Mountains. It has three bars, an 'attractive' residents' lounge, and a large restaurant in a converted dairy, which has stone walls and a large wood-burning stove. The chef, Grant Mulholland, serves 'straightforward, hearty' fare: 'Superb roast Welsh beef; plump trout from the River Ceiriog.' Housekeeping is 'immaculate'. 'The staff, all local, are without exception friendly and helpful. Very reasonable prices.' 'Our bedroom faced the village square.' Two wheelchair-users found access 'excellent'. The 'very good' breakfast has ample cooked choice, and is served until 10 am. Tables and chairs stand on the terrace and in the garden. Many sites of interest are nearby, and 'you can step out of the front door to walk for miles in any direction and probably not see another soul'. 'No mobile phone signal here, just peace.' (Therese Hickland, Richard and Jean Green)
