Review

This 'elegant Georgian house in manicured grounds', former shooting lodge of the dukes of Westminster, is run as a restaurant-with-rooms by chef/proprietor Bryan Webb and his wife, Susan. He 'continues to produce what must be as good as any food you will find in Wales', writes a fan, while she remains 'the ultimate hostess'. In the vale of Edeyrnion, facing the Berwyn Mountains, the house has 'spacious and comfortable public rooms'. The lounges have 'elegant drapes, soft lighting'; one has a piano. The bedrooms are 'thoughtfully furnished'. 'Mine was good sized, with sofa, writing table and a selection of glossy magazines.' 'Nicely framed paintings, bathroom with beautifully tiled floor and large walk-in shower.' Some rooms have 'views across stunning scenery in two directions'; all have flat-screen TV and DVD-player. 'A fantastic dinner, served at just the right pace, at well-spaced tables.' Dishes include buffalo mozzarella with dandelion, chicory, walnuts and Parmesan; rack of lamb with spiced aubergine purée. The wine list is wide-ranging. 'Great breakfast': fruit compote, freshly segmented pink grapefruit; delicious porridge; undyed smoked haddock; 'perfect poached eggs'. (Jim Grover, Gordon Hands)
