Langass Lodge

Review

In an isolated setting above an ancient stone circle, this former hunting lodge has been renovated and extended as an 'elegant' modern hotel with a 'personal touch'. It is owned by Niall and Amanda Leveson Gower; they run it with John and Anne Buchanan who take charge of cooking and hospitality. The bedrooms are in the main house and in a hillside extension with 'fabulous' views over a sea loch to Skye. 'Our room was comfortable and spacious with doors opening to the garden; the bathroom was rather OTT: modern taps, basin, etc, but no handrails.' There is 'plenty of storage, a king-size bed, wooden floors with rugs'. Visitors can dine in the bar or more formally in the restaurant. John Buchanan's short menus specialise in seafood (sometimes gathered from the owners' boat and pots), eg, steamed Barra cockles; surf and turf of wild Uist venison and monkfish loin. 'Delicious food; Niall and Amanda were friendly, sometimes serving at table.' Children are 'positively encouraged': there are high chairs, a special menu, toys in the lounge and information about activities on the island. Another comment: 'Perhaps an English country house rather than a North Uist feel.' (Jane and Tony Cowan, and others)
