The Portobello

Review

'Changing fashions in hotels may have passed The Portobello by, but it is redeemed by a sense of character, nothing anonymous here.' Praise from an inspector for this bohemian little hotel, long popular with A-list celebrities, in a Victorian terrace on a Notting Hill residential street. It is owned by Tim and Cathy Herring with partner Johnny Ekperigin (who manages it with Hanna Turner). The bedrooms vary considerably in size ('cabin' rooms have a small bathroom); the 'special rooms' are recommended. 'Discuss your choice before booking, preferably with Gloria, who is often on hand; she will describe all the features and/or drawbacks.' A third-floor room had a 'supremely comfortable four-poster bed, quality bedlinen and towels, large bathroom with dressing area; small balcony over the peaceful garden'. A simple continental breakfast is included in the room rate ('freshly squeezed juice, slabs of butter, excellent tea and coffee, but tiny pots of preserves'). It can be taken in the bedroom or the 'charming' garden-facing drawing room, which has gilt mirrors, military pictures, potted palms, Edwardiana. Cooked breakfast dishes are available à la carte; a 24-hour room service menu has snacks and light meals. The Portobello's residents get a discount at Julie's, the owners' restaurant/bar/café in nearby Clarendon Cross.
