In a leafy residential area, this unpretentious gastropub is just 25 minutes by train from Waterloo station. In May 2008, it was bought by celebrity chef Paul Merrett and his business partner, Greg Bellamy. Inspectors, who revisited in 2009, wrote of a 'relaxed neighbourhood feel' and 'good value in an agreeable area of London'. The simple bedrooms are in an annexe at the back: 'We had a warm welcome from a young Frenchman who carried our bag to one of the two large rooms. It had a medium-sized bed with a thick duvet; no wardrobe, but a dress rack with hanging shelves; the small shower room was efficient. All was quiet at night, but in the early morning we heard trains.' The 'charming' conservatory restaurant has wooden floor, big hanging lights (dim at night). Adjacent is a large and pretty terrace, with wisteria and fruit trees, for drinks and summer meals. The menu is based on seasonal ingredients, from small producers when possible. 'We enjoyed the bistro-style cooking: chicory and pear salad; trout with asparagus. Breakfast has good cereals and orange juice, DIY toast from good bread, delicious chunky marmalade. The bacon was disappointing, and tea was brought in the cup with a tea bag in: time they bought some teapots.' Popular with locals for a morning coffee or an evening drink.
