The rockwell

Review

Two Victorian terrace houses on the busy Cromwell Road have been turned into a hotel with a 'bright, modern' feel by owners Michael Squire (architect) and Tony Bartlett. Ocky Paller is the manager. 'Our emphasis is on understated contemporary style, crafted to create a relaxed atmosphere,' they say. The 'fine, high-ceilinged' lounge has an open fire; the small bar opens on to a garden with plants in huge pots, where drinks and meals can be served. There are 'interesting' wallpapers, bright patterns and colour. The bedrooms vary considerably in size. The biggest mezzanine suites have a lounge and sleeping area down a curved staircase; two garden rooms have a patio; smaller rooms make 'good use of space' with built-in light oak furnishings. All rooms have flat-screen TV, free broadband Internet access, a minibar. 'Double glazing kept out road noise.' Bathrooms are well lit and have a powerful shower. In the restaurant, overlooking the courtyard garden, chef Stephan Preda serves contemporary dishes, perhaps Cajun chicken skewer; cod with a Brazilian coconut and palm oil sauce. There is 24-hour room service. Breakfast, served until 10 am, has a buffet and various cooked dishes. 'Reasonable prices for central London.' More reports, please.
