In a spectacular setting above a golden, sandy beach in north Cornwall, this large hotel has welcomed families for over 40 years. Owner/manager sisters Emma Stratton, Deborah Wakefield and Rebecca Whittington have won awards for their committed green agenda: this year's initiatives include the installation of a recapture system to harness waste heat from fridges. A 'real nappy kit' is being tested. 'A most enjoyable stay: lovely staff, excellent food, attractive decor,' one visitor wrote. The public areas are 'relatively glamorous', with slate flooring, neutral colours, lots of oak. The bedrooms range from larger suites for families, to cheaper rooms without the sea view. There is much for children to do beyond the beach: they have clubs, indoor and outdoor play areas, daily entertainment; an Ofsted-registered nursery. The Ocean Spa has an indoor pool, an adult-only thermal suite, a hammam, and treatments. The chef, Adam Clark, serves table d'hôte menus in two dining rooms: he tries to source 70 per cent of the ingredients from Cornwall for his dishes (eg, roasted butternut squash, spinach and Cornish Blue cheese tart; rump of spring lamb, Cornish asparagus). A family dining option has special menus for adults and children. Lighter lunches are served in the Café Indigo. A sister hotel, The Scarlet, was due to open close by as the Guide went to press.
