Sysonby Knoll

Review

In a market town famous for pork pies and Stilton cheese, this traditional hotel stands in large grounds with a river frontage. Owners Jenny and Gavin Howling, with manager Wayne Jenson, provide 'fantastic accommodation and superb food', says a visitor in 2009. 'Good value; clean, well cared for', the red brick Edwardian house has a 'magical' garden with a pond, manicured lawns in front, trees on either side. Windows that face the road are double or triple glazed. Most bedrooms overlook a quadrangle around a central courtyard. They vary greatly in size and shape; two four-poster rooms look over the garden and river to cattle in fields. Rooms at the back are 'quiet, but slightly anonymous'. One couple found their room above the kitchen noisy and uncomfortable. The restaurant has recently been extended, and there is a new conservatory/coffee lounge area. Chef Susan Meakin's à la carte menu might include potted crab and prawns with cayenne, lemon and dill; venison stroganoff, basmati rice. Meals can also be taken in the bar. 'Interesting food, with an emphasis on local produce; cooking of an excellent standard.' 'Staff are very willing.' Children are not specifically catered for, but 'well-behaved ones are welcome', say the Howlings, parents of young children themselves, and there is a family room. The hotel is dog friendly, too.
