Review

Amid 'shimmering trees and meadows, bluebells and blackberries', this handsome Palladian villa was built in the 18th century, though the oldest part dates back to 1650. It is run in relaxed style by Rosemarie and Frank Kennan, who have long been restoring the house, which they bought from the Irish Georgian Society. 'The perfect home from home,' wrote a visitor who first stayed here 20 years ago. 'They made us as welcome as ever. The decor may be "battered", but it would not be the same if it became smart.' The Kennans, 'gracious and unaffected' hosts, sometimes join guests for drinks after dinner when 'good company and conversation abound'. The two-storey main hall has creaking floorboards, an eclectic collection of books, furniture and ornaments. The first-floor Blue Bedroom, large and high-ceilinged, is 'very comfortable'. Mrs Kennan's cooking is widely praised: her no-choice menus are based on 'what is available in the market', perhaps smoked mackerel in choux pastry with horseradish mayonnaise; medallions of lamb, port and redcurrant sauce. Children are welcomed (there is a 'wet-day' nursery with toys). A coach house, forge and cottage have been turned into self-catering units. (RR)
