The Dower House

Review

In a 'large, beautiful' wooded garden bordered by the rivers Beauly and Conon, this pretty Georgian cottage-orné is the family home of Robyn and Mena Aitchison. It is like a 'miniature treasure chest', say admirers: Persian rugs, Chinese vases, antiques, chintzy wallpaper, flowery fabrics, potted plants and stacked bookcases create a 'much-loved' feel. The lounge has an open fire, a baby grand piano, and a bar cupboard full of malt whiskies. The Aitchisons 'are friendly but don't interfere'; 'I felt totally pampered' is a typical comment. Guests are expected to dine in, in the 'most attractive' dining room with its 'gleaming mahogany tables'. The host is an 'excellent self-taught cook', who describes his no-choice menu (agreed in advance) as 'gutsy modern British' cooking, eg, darn of venison with peppercorn sauce. 'Magnificent puddings' include strawberries and lemon posset. 'Dietary requests speedily dealt with.' Generous breakfasts have fresh fruit salad, local honey, eggs from the owners' free-range hens. All the 'cosy' bedrooms face the garden (with monkey puzzle trees, shrubs, a large goldfish pond and a miniature orchard): they have a large bed; the suite has a sitting room. Children are welcomed.
