Ees Wyke

Review

Once the Lake District retreat of Beatrix Potter, this 'most attractive' Georgian building is endorsed this year for its 'friendly country house atmosphere and high standard of food and service'. Set in pretty gardens, it has panoramic views of Esthwaite Water and the fells beyond. Inspectors were greeted by chef/proprietor, Richard Lee (who runs it with his wife, Margaret), in his 'whites', and supported by friendly sheepdogs Harry and Teddy. The two 'nicely decorated' lounges have 'comfortable sofas, good pictures and ornaments'. 'The good accommodation has wonderful views.' Two bedrooms have their private bathroom across a landing (dressing gown provided). The 'excellent' dinner is at 7.30, in a 'lovely room with super views, well-spaced tables nicely laid'. Guests choose at 6.30 from a daily-changing five-course menu (three choices for each course); perhaps seared scallops with salad, rocket and basil dressing; roast breast of duckling with red onion and juniper marmalade. 'Well presented, varied, prepared with imagination.' There is a well-detailed wine list, 'reasonably priced'. Breakfast has a buffet (cereals, yogurts, freshly squeezed orange juice, etc); 'scrambled eggs the best of our trip; honey in the comb'. 'Ees Wyke' means east area. (Mr and Mrs GE Goodbody, ET, and others)
