Cnapan

Review

'The warmth with which Cnapan is run is self-evident, and the staff seemed to really enjoy being there.' This 'superb' pink-painted restaurant-with-rooms stands on the fairly quiet main street of this seaside town in the Pembrokeshire national park (the larger Newport is in Gwent). The owners, Michael and Judith Cooper and Eluned Lloyd, are 'thorough and thoughtful'. 'Every afternoon we were offered tea with Welsh scones in the comfortable little drawing room, log-burning stove lit for us.' The listed Georgian house is crammed with family treasures, books and games; a crowded Welsh dresser stands in the hall. 'Dinner in the restaurant, with slightly old-fashioned feel, consisted of the freshest sea bass ever.' Puddings are a speciality and there is a fine selection of Welsh cheeses. 'Vegetables especially good, locally sourced, seasonal and organic; service brisk, attentive, everyone showed kindness.' The small bedrooms have pine furniture, bright colours, tea/coffee-making facilities (a jug of fresh milk left in the fridge for early-morning tea). 'Shower room a miracle of compactness;, a shared bathroom available for wallowers.' The family room has an adjoining bunk-bedroom. Huge breakfasts include home-made marmalade, free-range eggs, and kippers. (AK, BS)
