Llys Meddyg

Review

'A welcoming place with outstanding food', this Georgian town house was a coaching inn, then a doctor's house (the name translates as Doctor's Court). It is run as a restaurant-with-rooms by owners Ed and Lou Sykes; Scott Davies is the chef. The 'smartly done-up' building has a guest sitting room, a 'spacious' dining room, and an 'atmospheric' cellar bar. Paintings by contemporary Welsh artists are displayed throughout (and are for sale). 'The service from young Welsh-speaking girls was cheerful and efficient. We enjoyed mini-crabcakes with our aperitifs,' said one visitor. 'The food really makes the place,' writes another guest. The fish and meat are locally sourced: 'Delicious sewin, halibut, coconut shrimp and rock oysters.' Herbs and vegetables come from a 'secret' garden at the back. The cooking is 'inventive but not over-elaborate': the menu might include deep-fried local sprats; Welsh Black beef hash, poached Pantyderi egg. Each of the two larger bedrooms has a separate dressing room. 'Our room had a very comfortable bed, and a sofa; a modish bathroom.' Breakfast includes fruit pancakes. There is a tented garden room for summer eating. (David Birnie, John Rowlands)
