Lerags House

Review

A 'really lovely place, and excellent value', this handsome grey stone house stands in a mature garden by Loch Feochan. Owners Bella and Charlie Miller have run it since 2001, after coming from Australia more than 15 years ago 'for a summer'. 'We are a two-person show, offering very personal service,' she says. Hungarian vizsla dogs Libby and Rex contribute to the 'warm welcome'. Her cooking ('Scottish with Australian flair') is 'inventive and artistic, ingredients fresh, cooking perfect'; the three-course menu might include Gressingham duck braised in mulled wine and with red cabbage. No choice, but 'Bella is flexible to guests' preferences'. The wine list reflects the Millers' Australian background. Public rooms and bedrooms are comfortably furnished, each in a different pastel or neutral colour. 'Our spacious suite had lovely views. Bed one of the best ever, beautifully made, with crisp, white linen.' The breakfast menu includes waffles, kippers, porridge and 'full Scottish'. A 'delighted' couple took the whole house for their wedding. 'The setting is beautiful in all weathers, the rooms are stylish, the food is delicious.' Visitors with 'limited disability' can be accommodated. (D and KV, Sandra and Jim Haslam, and others)
