The Black Swan

In a conservation village in a 'lovely, hilly setting' in the Eden valley, this once run-down Victorian inn has been renovated by its 'likeable and friendly' owners, Alan and Louise Dinnes. 'They seem determined to inject new life into the village,' say inspectors. Mrs Dinnes has reopened (after 20 years) the village shop in a converted downstairs bedroom. There is a 'comfortable' bar area (which serves real ales), and two 'attractive' dining rooms. 'Our pleasant bedroom was well equipped; it had new carpets, curtains and lamps, a comfortable seating area with armchairs; the compact bathroom had good storage and lots of hot water.' Two bedrooms in a ground-floor annexe with direct outdoor access are equipped for disabled visitors; dogs are also welcomed here. There are family rooms, and games and DVDs for children. 'A well-written information pack.' Chef Tim Stephenson's extensive menu offers 'generous portions of straightforward food', as much as possible sourced locally: 'My haddock came in a crispy beer batter with good mushy peas, and a mountain of thick chips.' Breakfast has a 'well-executed' cooked English, kippers; 'four generous slices of cheese, chorizo and Serrano ham'; packaged juice. 'Good value.' Musical events are held.
