Millgate House

Review

Near the market place of this 'delightful' town, this early Georgian stone house has an award-winning walled garden (open to the public from April to October). The owners, Austin Lynch and Tim Culkin, who emphasise that 'we are not a restaurant/hotel, this is our home', tell us that they have redecorated throughout, replacing windows, refreshing bathrooms (and renewing towels). Two of the three bedrooms overlook the garden. A recent visitor had 'a large, light room with fabulous views over the dales; bed nicely dressed; thoughtful extras'. The 'charming' public rooms are 'filled with delightful objects': antiques, pictures, books, etc. One couple described the style as 'shabby chic'. Breakfast, now served until 9.45 am in the elegant green-walled dining room, has a 'bountiful' buffet (fresh fruit, 'perfect' croissants), 'good cooked dishes', 'excellent coffee'. 'Thankfully, no background music.' A set, pre-selected six-course dinner (£60-£65) is available for groups of 16 or more (a performance by a magician can be arranged). Dogs are welcomed. (WA, and others)
