Churchtown House

Review

In large grounds in a hamlet south of Rosslare, this handsome white Georgian house has long been liked by readers for the warmth of the welcome from the 'open and approachable' owners, Austin and Patricia Cody, and for the beautiful location. The public areas have original Irish paintings, attractive modern objets d'art. Guests gather for sherry before dinner, perhaps in front of an open fire in the sitting room. Ingredients for the four-course no-choice meal (served at separate tables) are sourced locally when possible from Wexford: dishes like leek and potato soup; chicken risotto, ginger and honey sauce. Children are catered for. The bedrooms have a thick carpet and traditional fabrics; there are big, comfortable beds; a ground-floor bedroom had 'ample storage, good lighting; a fierce shower'. Breakfast has yogurt, prunes, various egg dishes. It can be provided early for guests catching a dawn ferry to Fishguard. The medieval walled town of Wexford is nearby; early suppers are provided for residents attending its opera festival. More reports, please.
