Rylstone Manor

Review

Steep cliff steps lead down from this traditional hotel to the beaches of Sandown Bay. Built as a Victorian gentleman's residence (with references to neo-Tudor, Gothic and Georgian styles), it stands in 'glorious' parkland gardens ('red squirrel country') in which visitors are encouraged to relax. The 'friendly' owners, Mike and Carole Hailston, have done much upgrading since taking over in 2006. He is the chef, cooking a daily-changing menu of 'traditional to French/Italian' dishes, eg, butternut squash and chorizo soup; cod loin, cream and Noilly Prat sauce. This is served by candlelight in the 'intimate' dining room. 'The staff were very pleasant.' There are books and ornaments in the green-walled lounge; a Victorian-style covered patio has basket chairs and magazines. The 'well-furnished' bedrooms, named after English trees (Willow, Fir, Ash, etc), vary in size. 'Beautiful lacy linen and attractive bedding.' Shanklin is a 20-minute walk away. (PE Carter)
