Thomas Luny House

Review

Long liked by Guide readers for its 'high standards' and 'good value', this white-painted Georgian house was built in 1808 by the marine artist Thomas Luny when the town was favoured by Nelson's admirals and captains. It is run as a B&B by its 'charming' owners, John and Alison Allan. Of the 'well-equipped' bedrooms (mineral water, books and magazines, tea-making with fresh milk, bathrobes and flowers), three are spacious (the fourth is smaller). The Chinese room has hand-painted oriental furniture, a canopy bed; the Luny room has an appropriate nautical theme; the Bitton has a four-poster bed. Spare blankets are kept in an old chest (which acts as luggage rack). An 'excellent' afternoon tea with 'delicious' cake is included in the price: in summer it can be taken in a walled garden. There are antiques and open fires in the drawing room, which runs the length of the house, and the breakfast room; each has French windows opening on to the garden. The 'excellent' breakfast has freshly squeezed orange juice, compote of fruits, fresh fruit salad, local cheeses, freshly baked bread. Cooked dishes include 'perfect' scrambled eggs. (MF)
