An Lochan

Review

'Staff were delightful,' reports a visitor this year to this white, bay-windowed seafront hotel. Named in Gaelic 'by the small loch', it stands across a small road from the shore in an unspoilt fishing village on the Kyles of Bute. Sadly the latest news (mid-February) is that the hotel is in adminstration and is being run by its bank until new owners can be found. Earlier guests enjoyed complimentary tea and cake on arrival. 'Our well-appointed room had an excellent view and a spacious bathroom.' In the wooden-floored Deck brasserie, and the intimate and more formal Crustacean restaurant, chef Paul Scott's modern Scottish menu might include langoustines and scallops straight from the local waters. Puddings are 'superb'. The menu in the Snug Bar (popular with locals) is simpler, eg, supreme of salmon; pot-roasted chicken. Bold colours are used in the bedrooms and the 'attractive and comfortable' public rooms, which have local paintings and sculpture, books and family memorabilia. 'A good breakfast, with plenty of choice.' Golf, sailing, riding, fishing and cruises (to see porpoises, seals and dolphins) can be arranged. (PB, and others)
