'Well run, with enthusiastic staff; the welcome was warm,' writes an inspector in 2009. On the road leading to the harbour in a 'delightful' village on the West Sussex coast, this converted manor house has a manicured garden with millstream and gazebo. Long managed by the 'ever-present' Antony Wallace, it has many fans. 'We were impressed with the service,' one wrote. 'A happy weekend,' said another. The bedrooms, with conventional decor, vary in size: all have a fridge with fresh milk and bottled water. 'Ours had a four-poster, lots of space, comfortable chairs.' 'Our small room had patterned wallpaper and carpet, curtains heavily draped. Its small bathroom was fresh and clean.' A wheelchair-dependent visitor found the garden room 'ideal'. The bar area and large lounge, 'if old-fashioned, have comfortable settees and chairs'. The cooking is generally thought 'good, if not exceptional; well presented. Waiting staff, a mix of British and East European, were unfailingly smiling and keen. Wines reasonably priced.' A pianist accompanies dinner on Friday and Saturday. The 'excellent' breakfast includes wide choice of fruit, cereals, kippers, comb honey. Bar lunches are available. Guests attending the Chichester theatre can have an early supper.
