Shelburne Lodge

'A great place' (according to a returning visitor in 2012), Tom and Maura Foley's handsome 18th-century farmhouse has long been popular with Guide readers for the welcome, the ambience and the 'magnificent' breakfasts. Another comment (from a trusted correspondent): 'The house is full of the personality of the owners; everyone is a friend from the moment they arrive.' A family member is invariably on hand to greet visitors, providing home-made cake and tea in an elegant drawing room, which has good seating, an open fire. In extensive grounds on the edge of the town, the house is furnished with flair: striking colours, plants and flowers, antiques, modern art. Wi-Fi is free. The bedrooms are divided between the house and a coach house (especially good for families). Mr Foley presides at breakfast: orange juice is freshly squeezed; starters include fresh fruit and natural yogurt; bread is home baked; don't miss the fish of the day. Kenmare has many eating places but guests might be tempted by the Foleys' own popular bar/restaurant, Packie's; Maura Foley's sister runs The Purple Heather bistro. (Esler Crawford, Eithne Scallan)
  • Full of the personality of the owners. Everyone is a friend from the moment of arrival. A wide- ranging selection of guests, all very happy. Peaceful setting; a short walk from town and its excellent restaurants.
