Ardanaiseig

Down a ten-mile track by Loch Awe, this late Georgian house stands in extensive wooded grounds. It is endorsed 'even more emphatically' this year by a returning visitor who was impressed by the 'exceptional kindness shown by the staff in regard to my wife's disability'. Log fires burn in the gilt-and-beige drawing room and the intimate library bar, which owner Bennie Gray, founder of Gray's Antiques Market in London, has fitted with antique furniture and works of art. Individually designed bedrooms have views on to the garden or the loch: sunny, yellow Cuaig has a bold red brass bed and a bath alcove; split-level Orchy has a small conservatory. At the bottom of the woodland garden, a former boathouse is now a modern, glass-fronted 'cottage' perched on the water. In the dining room overlooking the loch, chef Gary Goldie's much-praised Franco-Scottish cooking is 'varied, inventive and delicious'. He forages in the woods for ingredients for his dishes. 'A tomato consommé with herbs was as subtle and delicate as many a fine wine. Saddle of roe deer was tasty and tender.' There are woodland and loch-side trails for walkers and cyclists. (Robert Chandler)
  • It must be the most peaceful hotel in Britain. Seven-course no-choice dinner - woul have preferred four courses with choice. Excellent breakfat. A very comfortable garden room - the gardens are quite a feature. Pete the genereral manager much in evidence. High Victorian decor - most unusual.

    Sir John B. Hall, 05/08/2012

  • We spent two nights a couple of years ago and were very impressed. After a longer stay, I can only repeat our praise still more emphatically. The cooking was varied, inventive and delicious. Saddle of roe deer was as tasty and tender as any we have ever eaten. The staff were exceptionally kind and helpful in regard to my wife's disability: with flair and imagination, the chef prepared dairy-free dishes for her.

    Robert Chandler, 16/08/2011
