Killiecrankie Hotel

César award in 2011

'We arrived in glorious sunshine and were given an equally sunny welcome inside,' say visitors this year to Henrietta Fergusson's ever-popular small hotel, a 19th-century dower house in expansive wooded grounds at the entrance to the Pass of Killiecrankie. Other praise: 'Henrietta is a dominant presence - in the best possible sense'; 'To say she is hands-on doesn't do justice to her ubiquity.' In the restaurant and 'buzzing' bar, 'talented' chef Mark Easton serves 'excellent' dinners. 'We had beautifully tender local venison with rösti; plaice with scallops was very nice indeed; a plum and ginger mousse was delicious and light.' Service is by 'efficient' young staff dressed in tartan trousers (a Scottish guest thought them 'naff not elegant', but conceded that non-Scots might consider them 'charming'). Much attention to detail in the 'comfortable' bedrooms ('lots of bathroom goodies', hot-water bottles left in the bed during turn-down). Breakfast has a 'lavish' selection of conserves but 'too-small portions of butter'. 'We had some good walks in the surrounding countryside.' 'Wonderfully relaxing.' (Sara Price, Esler Crawford, John Gibbon, Dennis Marler)
  • Our fourth visit. As ever excellent. Our room had been refurbished, and reflected the consistently high standard of elegance and confort.

    Alan & Edwina Williams, 07/08/2012

  • Henrietta is open-hearted. The food was excellent. Our room was fine. Fully deserves itd Cesar award.

    John Gibbon, 15/01/2012

  • The welcome was warm. Staff all very efficient and friendly. Our room was comfortable, with a good-sizzed bathroom. Dinners were excellent, breakfast also good.

    Sara Price, 18/11/2011
