The Cross at Kingussie

This converted 19th-century tweed mill stands in wooded grounds by the River Gynack, in the Cairngorms national park. Its dining room, beamed with stone walls, opens on to a terrace which overlooks the river, as do some of the bedrooms. It was run for ten years as a restaurant-with-rooms with a reputation for 'stunning, highly accomplished' food. The Cross has recently been bought by Derek and Celia Kitchingman who 'intend to maintain and build upon its reputation for hospitality and food'. Five of the bedrooms have been renewed this winter with brand new fixings and tilings in the bathroom. We'd be grateful for reports on the new regime.
  • A friendly welcome from the new owners. Our largish bedroom overlooked the river – secondary glazing needed, for the sound of the running water over the falls is noticeable. Bathroom a bit dated. The white-walled dining room has a central open fireplace, attractive paintings of rural scenes in the style of Gaugin. A yellow striped tartan carpet adds a splash of colour. Tables and chairs are of light wood. The chef – Ross Sutherland – is young and newly appointed. Tasting menu delicious and a real bargain at the price. Intensity of flavour and first-class portion control. Scrambled egg cooked to perfection, sweet bacon and black pudding to die for made breakfast a life-affirming experience. Service prompt and attentive. There is a pleasant upstairs lounge: books and magazines freely available.

  • The new owners welcomed us warmly. Our room was large and comfortable, with a view over the river. The upstairs residents’ lounge was filled with comfortable armchairs and sofas and rather too many ornaments. The downstairs dining room was large and light, with a glowing fire each night. The talented chef provides fine-dining meals. Breakfast includes a very good cold buffet table.
