Cavens

'Delightful; the peaceful location is perfect for a relaxing stay.' Praise this year from fellow Guide hoteliers for Angus and Jane Fordyce's small country hotel, a white-painted manor house near Dumfries. 'Angus runs a very good ship.' The bedrooms, 'immaculate and comfortable', vary in size and aspect. They are decorated in traditional country house style, with tea- and coffee-making kit, fruit, biscuits; a modern bathroom. The cottages have a simpler style. 'I had a large bedroom on the ground floor, with a well-equipped, cavernous bathroom.' Angus Fordyce, the chef, uses vegetables from the kitchen garden and seasonal produce for his 'tasty' dishes on an 'excellent-value' set menu (there is also à la carte). It is served in the 'impressive' dining room ('antique furniture, white tablecloths, beautiful glassware, silver cutlery'). Dishes might include salmon and dill tartlet; fillet of Galloway pork, wholegrain and cream sauce. There's a 'well-thought-out' wine list. Breakfast was 'spot on; the poached eggs and black pudding were the best we have eaten'. 'Angus gives great advice on local treasures. Would we return? Very soon.' (Tim Culkin and Austin Lynch, David Craig)
  • When we arrived, a member of staff immediately appeared to welcome us and help with our luggage. Our large bedroom had a big bed (lovely bedlinen) and plenty of storage space; we also had a large sun room, with a wall of windows, a big sofa to lounge on and look at the view, and an antique desk. The bathroom was well equipped and with a large bath. Pleasing touches included heavy floor-length curtains which matched the bedhead and the cushions. The atmosphere was restful; the staff were smiling; service was exemplary. The (quiet) background music in the lounge seemed unnecessary. We enjoyed afternoon tea on the terrace. Breakfasts were particularly good, with plenty of choice and well-presented cooked dishes. Dinners were well served although not particularly memorable.

  • Very well decorated and maintained. I had a large bedroom on the ground floor, with a cavernous bathroom, very well equipped. Nice public rooms. Excellent dinner and cheerful service.

  • Delightful. Angus runs a very good ship. The room was immaculate and comfortable. The peaceful location is perfect for a relaxing stay. Dinner was well cooked with efficient service and an excellent wine list. At £25 we thought the dinner fixed menu excellent value. The wine list was well thought out and was, like the meal, fairly priced. Breakfast was spot on. We love strong good coffee and Angus made it to our liking. Poached eggs and black pudding were the best we have eaten. Angus gives great advice on local treasures. There is a great beach within minutes of Cavens.
