Swinside Lodge

In a 'lovely, secluded setting with Lake District peaks all around', Mike and Kath Bilton run their white-painted Regency house as a small hotel. It is 'strongly endorsed' by readers for the 'very high standards of service' (this year's comment). Other praise: 'They are lovely people running a welcoming hotel with a strong personal touch.' There are two 'inviting' sitting rooms. In a 'lovely' dining room the chef, Clive Imber, serves an 'outstanding' daily-changing four-course menu with dishes like sesame tiger prawns, cucumber salad; fillet of Cumbrian beef, stuffed artichoke, roast parsnips. 'Dinner was delicious; original, well balanced and beautifully presented.' The bedrooms come in three sizes; a superior room 'with glorious views' was 'nicely furnished'; a small room was 'spotless with a bed'. Evening turn-down is appreciated as are 'nice touches' like guidebooks, a sewing kit, mineral water. The 'yummy' breakfast has 'more than the full English; interesting options include local ham with poached eggs. When we had to go out early on a photo shoot, Kath gave us great bacon butties on our return.' (JG, and others)

  • Tasty, generous and colourful food with especially friendly and helpful service. An informative, extensive wine list. Our superior room was immaculate, and we enjoyed pastoral sounds, but it was quite small and dark.
