Langar Hall

César award in 2000

'The complete antidote to faceless hotels; it feels like staying with friends in the country, except that the food is better.' Warm praise comes in 2012 from a regular Guide correspondent for Imogen Skirving's informal small hotel in the Vale of Belvoir. 'Quite a character, she is very much a hands-on owner,' is another comment. 'It is a tribute to her thoroughness that everything functions impeccably in her absence; the young staff have just the right level of cheerful attentiveness.' Stuccoed and apricot-washed, the late Georgian building has been in Mrs Skirving's family for over 150 years. The white sitting room has an open log fire, comfortable seating. Bedrooms are themed (Bohemia was once an artist's studio), or named after previous guests (Cartland, although no longer pink, is a 'romantic' room). Two bedrooms share a sitting room in a former gardener's cottage at the end of the lime avenue. In the pillared dining room, chefs Gary Booth and Ross Jeffrey serve 'very good' seasonal dishes. The marmite popcorn that accompanies pre-dinner drinks is not universally enjoyed. (Peter Jowitt, Mrs Blethyn Elliott, and others)
  • As ever, the welcome was warm. The room was extremely comfortable. Dinner was very good indeed. Breakfast was excellent. Imogen was away but everything functioned perfectly. The young staff have just the right level of cheerful attentiveness. A very relaxed atmosphere.

    Peter Jowitt, 16/01/2012

  • Very comfortable bedrooms, lots of free-range coathangers. Excellent dinner. Afternoon tea overpriced.Hands-on owner and large staff.

  • I fund this hotel by accident but it was a truly excellent find. The atmosphere was instantly relaxing and pleasant and the food was excellent. Attention to detail and service was great. I look forward to going again
