Langar Hall

César award in 2000

In the Vale of Belvoir, this honey-stone Georgian mansion has been owned by Imogen Skirving's family since the mid-19th century. She runs it in informal style as a small hotel, long liked by Guide readers for the 'timeless, understated' qualities (the Guide award was for 'utterly enjoyable mild eccentricity'). The drawing room has a club fender, photographs of the Bloomsbury Group; the bar has prints associated with the designer Paul Smith. The themed bedrooms are named after people who have stayed in the house. Barristers, a masculine room with painted panelling, reflects Langar Hall's popularity with the legal profession. Agnew's, a garden chalet with a veranda, is named after the BBC cricket correspondent who stays when reporting on Trent Bridge test matches. New this year is the Lodge, a converted gardener's cottage with two bedrooms sharing a bathroom. The daily-changing menu of the chef, Gary Booth, might include beetroot risotto; fallow venison, rösti, red cabbage, saffron-spiced pear. Light meals are served all day in a conservatory which has Lloyd Loom chairs. (PJ)

  • As ever, the welcome was warm. The room was extremely comfortable. Dinner was very good indeed. Breakfast was excellent. Imogen was away but everything functioned perfectly. The young staff have just the right level of cheerful attentiveness. A very relaxed atmosphere.

  • I fund this hotel by accident but it was a truly excellent find. The atmosphere was instantly relaxing and pleasant and the food was excellent. Attention to detail and service was great. I look forward to going again
