'The hands-on owners make all the difference' at this 'special' hotel, in a creeper-covered 17th-century farmhouse on the edge of the North York Moors. Bertie Wood, his mother, Jane, and brother, Tom, are the 'most welcoming' hosts; 'the service is outstanding'. The traditional hotel is set in 'beautiful' grounds with 'spectacular' views across the moors; inside, there is an open fire in the 'well-furnished' lounge overlooking the terrace and 'delightful' rose garden. Bedrooms are 'small and old-fashioned but spotlessly clean and comfortable'. The whole is 'like being in an Agatha Christie novel'. In the dining room, chefs Paul Cattaneo and Sandra Thurlow cook 'first-class' traditional English dishes using meat from local farms and game from the moors, perhaps roast Lastingham grouse, apple and gale jelly, bread sauce, game chips; 'melt-in-the-mouth' roast beef. Afternoon tea is served every day, with home-made cakes and scones, generous portions of cream and jam. Children have an adventure playground and special meals.   • This is a lovely hotel. Our bedroom was quite large. D,B&B rates include tea and delicious warm scones with jam and cream. They manage a completely different dinner menu every evening. No long waits between courses. Wines reasonably priced. The garden is very attractive, and the staff are beyond praise. A model of what a country hotel should be.

  • We were delighted to return. The lounge and our bedroom are well furnished and most comfortable. The food is first class with good choice. A delightful garden. But what really makes it special is the Wood family, most welcoming, hands-on, which makes all the difference.
