Lastingham Grange

César award in 1991

'You cannot help but love Lastingham Grange; you are so well looked after by the pleasant staff from early-morning tea to the five-course dinner.' There are many returning visitors to the 'hard-working' Wood family's traditional hotel, which is one of only four places to have had an entry in every edition of the Guide. Bertie Wood is helped by his mother, Jane, and brother, Tom. The converted 17th-century farmhouse stands in large gardens and fields on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors: 'You can be on the moor within five minutes from the front door - perfect for working up an appetite.' Afternoon tea, with hot scones, may be taken in the lounge or the rose garden; at dinner, chef Paul Cattaneo serves a daily-changing menu of 'good, plain English cooking'. 'Roast beef melts in the mouth; the Cointreau ginger log is scrumptious.' Comfortable bedrooms have 'all you need [tea- and coffee-making facilities, fresh milk and biscuits], and a lovely view of the garden'. Children are welcomed: there is an adventure playground, and special meals can be arranged. (Carol Norris, and others)
  • Staying was like in being in an Agatha Christie novel, a truly remarkable experience. People who had been coming for decades and decades made up the majority of the clientele. The service was outstanding – everyone knew your name immediately, and the staff constantly check if you need anything. The food was traditional and very good. The bathrooms and bedrooms are small and old-fashioned but spotlessly clean and comfortbale. There is superb walking on the moors straight from the door. A truly charming hotel, unusual in this day and age.

  • Long a favourite of ours, this wonderful hotel is deep in the moors. Beautaiful grounds with spectacular views. The bedrooms are comfy. Staff are helpful. Delicious foods, eg roast grouse or partridge, tempti8ng puds.
