Lastingham Grange

César award in 1991

'Staying at Lastingham Grange is a truly remarkable experience, like being in an Agatha Christie novel. It seemed that the majority of the guests had been coming for decades.' Perhaps this is explained by the 'outstanding service' received by a visitor this year to the Wood family's traditional hotel, a converted 17th-century farmhouse on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. 'Everyone knows your name immediately, and staff are constantly checking if you need anything, and bringing tea and coffee.' It is a family affair: Bertie Wood is helped by his mother, Jane, and brother, Tom. Not all guests are elderly: children are welcomed; under-twelves share their parents' room for no charge; there's an adventure playground and special meals. The bedrooms are 'small and old-fashioned but spotlessly clean and comfortable'. In the dining room, chef Paul Cattaneo serves food 'which is traditional but very good' (typical dishes: chilled melon with Parma ham; roast duckling, sage and onion stuffing). 'Superb walking on the moors from the door; a truly charming hotel, unusual in this day and age.' (Val Ferguson)
  • We were delighted to return. The lounge and our bedroom are well furnished and most comfortable. The food is first class with good choice. A delightful garden. But what really makes it special is the Wood family, most welcoming, hands-on, which makes all the difference.

  • Staying was like in being in an Agatha Christie novel, a truly remarkable experience. People who had been coming for decades and decades made up the majority of the clientele. The service was outstanding – everyone knew your name immediately, and the staff constantly check if you need anything. The food was traditional and very good. The bathrooms and bedrooms are small and old-fashioned but spotlessly clean and comfortbale. There is superb walking on the moors straight from the door. A truly charming hotel, unusual in this day and age.

  • Long a favourite of ours, this wonderful hotel is deep in the moors. Beautaiful grounds with spectacular views. The bedrooms are comfy. Staff are helpful. Delicious foods, eg roast grouse or partridge, tempti8ng puds.
