'It is a privilege to stay in such a well-maintained historic house,' say inspectors visiting this half-timbered home (Grade I listed), originally owned by Benedictine monks, later an Elizabethan merchant's house. The owners, Tim and Gilli Pitt, 'encourage visitors to enjoy the exceptional public rooms'. Approached through a herb garden, the massive front door opens on to the Great Hall and a linked lounge. There are rugs on brick and oak floors, sofas and armchairs, wooden antiques and family photographs; an honesty bar. A log fire burns in the inglenook fireplace in the hall; a wood-burner in the lounge. 'Both rooms were prepared when we were the only guests, a thoughtful touch.' Two oak staircases, one Jacobean, lead to the 'bedchambers'. 'What a special room: huge floorboards, beams on the terracotta-painted walls and white ceiling. Two armchairs and a large sleigh bed; the bathroom, up two steps, had a claw-footed bath and walk-in shower.' Breakfast, in another beamed room, had a small buffet of cereals, fruit, oranges with a squeezer; 'delicious' bacon and sausages.
