Lavenham Priory

César award in 2012

In one of the best-preserved medieval wool villages in England, this half-timbered former Benedictine priory (Grade I listed) dates from the 13th century. 'It's a privilege to sleep in such a historic building,' said one visitor. The owners, Tim and Gilli Pitt, have restored the priory in the style of the merchant's house it became during its Elizabethan period. Guests approach the 'wonderful facade' through a mini-parterre, with herbs and old roses. The bedchambers, reached by oak staircases, have many original features: braced crown posts, wall paintings, massive oak floorboards. 'What a special room,' wrote an inspector. 'It had beams on the terracotta-painted walls; brocade curtains and matching bedspread; a sitting area with armchairs, and an incongruous plasma television.' Guests are encouraged to make full use of the centre-piece of the building, the Great Hall, which has a log fire in an enormous inglenook fireplace, and rugs on the brick floor. There is also a smaller sitting room. Breakfast, a communal affair at a large table with white damask cloth and napkins, has freshly squeezed orange juice, DIY toast, cooked dishes to order.
  • What a wonderful place. We were made to feel extremely welcome; it was like being lord of the manor. The breakfast was superb1
