The Feathers

'Quaint and atmospheric as ever', David Elliston's 400-year-old coaching inn in the centre of the old market town is a 'great place to stay', say fans. A visitor this year was given 'an excellent welcome; our bags were carried up the quirky old staircase to our second-floor bedroom'. Older rooms have beamed walls and ceiling, antique furniture; the largest has a seating area. More modern rooms, with high ceiling and tall windows, are in the former ballroom. A small room overlooking the high street was 'very comfortable; a compact but adequate bathroom'. The bar and lounges are a popular local gathering place. There are two dining areas: Fuggles Brasserie, a panelled room with a hop-clad ceiling, and Quills, the more formal option, suited to a 'romantic dinner for two'. 'A delicious dinner in Fuggles; good pea and ham soup; free-range chicken, a wonderful Pimm's jelly. The service was very good; all the staff are friendly.' The lack of muzak pleased visitors in 2912. Breakfast is 'cheerfully served; a choice of fruit and cereals and a very tasty full English with good-quality sausages and bacon; lots of toast'. (Roland Cassam)
  • Charming panelled restauramt hung with hops. Very helpful barman and serving ladies, all English. Good, straightforward pub food.

  • Still a great place to stay, quaint and atmospheric as ever, with many locals passing through. Excellent welcome at Reception, and bags carried up the quirky old staircase. The bedroom on the second floor was not large but very comfortable, with a view over the High Street. Everything very clean. Bathroom small, but adequate. The excellent Mary still presides benevolently as manageress, and Michael the long-time waiter is as eficient as ever. In fact all the staff are good and friendly. We had a delicious dinner in Fuggles Brasserie, which was as usual very busy, which adds to the good atmosphere. Breakfast was cheerfully served and had good choice. Still a great place to stay, but the Leisure Centre at the back needs a bit of refreshing and updating.
