Rosleague Manor

César award in 2010

Facing across a sea lough to Connemara's wild and empty hills, this Georgian manor house is run in hands-on style by Mark Foyle and his father, Edmund. The atmosphere is 'wonderfully relaxed', says its greatest fan. The 'elegant' lounges have fine furniture, 'copious flower arrangements', log and turf fires. An earlier visitor wrote: 'The grandeur may be slightly faded, but with so much space indoors and out, the lack of cutting-edge luxury doesn't seem to matter.' Emmanuel Neu was appointed chef in 2011. We would welcome reports on his French country house cooking on a daily-changing menu, eg, green asparagus wrapped in Bayonne ham; rack of Connemara lamb, duchesse potato, ratatouille, rosemary sauce. The bedrooms are 'solid, spacious, comfy'. A room at the front has a 'breathtaking view of the gardens'; a junior suite was 'comfortable, though I didn't like the plastic corner bath'. Room 1 has 'an enormous Victorian bathtub with a powerful overhead shower'. Breakfast is 'simple but satisfying; home-baked scones, brown bread, raspberry and blackcurrant jams are particularly good'. (Ann Walden, and others)
  • We watched other guests, like us, arrive looking frazzled and depart a few days later cheerful and refrheshed. A wonderfully relaxed and informal atmosphere. The energetic Mark Foyle and his team make it look effortless. Chef Emmanuel Neu serves enjoyable starters, high-quality meat and fish. Portions are well judged. Breakfast has fresh orange juice and fruit salad; home-baked bread, scones, etc, grills cooked to order and fish of the day.
