The Arundell Arms

César award in 2006

'This really is an excellent hotel; we have resolved to go back for some fly-fishing.' A visitor this year loved Adam Fox-Edwards's West Country sporting inn. 'The staff are all so friendly.' The Arundell Arms is popular with fishing and shooting visitors (it has 20 miles of fishing rights on seven different rivers), but visitors without sporting interests are equally at home. Bedrooms ('very pleasant and well appointed') are decorated in country house style. Wi-Fi is available throughout. The best rooms are in a rear extension: 'Ours had a separate seating area.' The Courthouse bar has stone walls, bars over the windows indicating its original use. 'Delicious' pub favourites and dishes from a specials board are served here. The 'cosy' lounges have lots of seating. The dining room is a grander affair; once the village assembly room, it has high ceilings, and panels depicting classical statues. Here, the long-serving chef, Steve Pidgeon, provides dishes like wood mushroom consommé; mixed grill of sea fish with asparagus and salad leaves. 'Food and service were excellent.' (Kenneth Moore, David RW Jervois)
  • This remains an excellent family-run hotel. We are not fishermen but were made very welcome by polite and attentive staff. Our room was well appointed and equipped. A lot of stairs to climb. A good choice of well-cooked food, pleasantly served.

  • An excellent combination of relatively simple accommodation and outstanding cooking (though the menu didn't chage during our stay). The breakfast shared the freshness and elegance of dinner. A convivial bar, a comfortable residents' lounge. The dining room has been refurbished in a continental style. The manager/owner was in evidence.
