No. 1 Pery Square

In a terrace regarded as one of the finest examples of late Georgian architecture in Ireland, this conversion of two town houses is run as a small hotel by Patricia Roberts. It gains a full entry following reports from regular correspondents. 'One of the nicest places in Ireland; the food is streets ahead of most,' says a fellow Guide hotelier. 'Outstanding; we were looked after with genuine care,' is another comment. The four most spacious bedrooms and a suite are on the top floors; other rooms are more compact: 'Ours was small but well furnished, with an enormous bed; the bathroom was almost as big as the bedroom; no tea-making facilities but the lads who greeted us were quick to bring complimentary tea; they told us to ring any time we needed more.' Afternoon tea can be taken in an elegant drawing room with an original marble fireplace. In Brasserie One, the chef, Alan Burns, cooks dishes with a 'strong French influence', eg, halibut, basil-crushed potatoes, aubergine caviar, sauce vierge. 'The menu is innovative, the cooking sensitive.' (Johnny Madden, Valerie Durkan)
  • What a find! This hotel was outstanding. Our room was small and faced the street, with accompanying street sounds, but it was well furnished, with the most enourmous bed and a bathroom almost as big as the bedroom. No tea/coffee facilities in the room, but the young lads who greated us and happily showed us our room were quick to bring complimentary tea to our room and told us to ring any time we needed more. The two lads, again, were running the dining room and served us with genuine care. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the Rioja was one of the best we had ever tasted. Breakfast - no big fry-up, but something much better: fresh juices, home-baked banana bread, eggs anyway you want. All of this dished up by one elegant and friendly lady. The public rooms are small, and pre dinner drinks very expensive but we will both remember dinner and the skill with which we were served.
