Sheedy's

'It has all the modern comforts while retaining some pleasantly old-fashioned touches,' says a visitor to John and Martina Sheedy's small hotel/restaurant on the edge of the Burren. 'Beds have blankets, tea is made with leaves, and breakfast is buffet free.' Another comment (in 2012): 'An excellent small hotel ith a warm welcome.' The house has been in the family since the mid-1700s, and run as a hotel since 1935. Mr Sheedy is the chef, while his wife looks after front-of-house; 'Martina runs it so well; she is a constant presence, leading by example and putting the needs of her guests first.' The bar and library 'are cosy but a little dark'; the lighter reception area has a turf fire and large windows overlooking the garden. 'Our large bedroom had a sitting area; the bathroom was impressive; twin basins, bath, separate walk-in shower, abundant white towels.' Mr Sheedy serves an à la carte menu in the dining room, simpler dishes in the bar. 'All very good: excellent crispy duck with spiced pears; hake with spinach and red pepper sauce. Portions are generous.' Breakfast 'is a particular strength', with 'some unusual and imaginative options'. (AW, Florence and Russell Birch)
  • An excellent small hotel, with a very warm welcome, in a wonderful location.

  • Martina Sheedy runs it well, and is a constanst presnce front-of-house. She and John set standards to which all hoteliers should aspire. Sheedy's has all modern comforts while retaining some pleasantly old-fashionged touches. Our large room had a sitting area and an impressive bathroom. The bar and library are cosy but a little dark; we preferred to take drinks in the reception area which has a turf fire and a large window overlooking the garden. The food is very good though the menu appears not to change. Breakfast has some unusul and imaginative options.
