The New White Lion

In a small drovers' town with a 12th-century castle, this Victorian pub (Grade II listed) has been turned into a contemporary guest house by Gerald and Sylvia Pritchard. Born in 'this special part of the world', they are 'natural hosts'. They have decorated the house in muted colours, with polished wooden floors, feature wallpaper, fine fabrics. There is an honesty bar in the lounge, which has chandeliers, comfortable sofas, an open fire. Cream teas can be taken in a conservatory. Dinner is served by arrangement in an elegant dining room. Peter Devlin and Mrs Pritchard prepare 'truly home-made' dishes, perhaps Black beef in red wine or lemon roast chicken. The 'spotless' bedrooms have antiques, 'very comfortable beds'; bathrooms are 'cleverly designed'. A large ground-floor room has a walk-in wet room. Breakfast, served until 11 am, has home-made marmalade, local organic sausages and bacon; fish of the day. A picnic can be provided, perhaps to take on a nature walk along one of the four rivers which meander through the valley. More reports, please.

  • We enjoyed our stay. Everythng was spotless and the Prichards were very welocoming. we were the only people staying in the hotel so the cooking was done by Sylvia Prichard and was very good everything very fresh. Our room was small and the power shower wasnt! The wide-screen TV was a bit narrow.
