The Lake

César award in 1992

In extensive parkland by the River Irfon, Jean-Pierre Mifsud's half-timbered hotel was built as a 19th-century hunting lodge. Today's visitors enjoy the 'fabulous setting, great walks around the lake, along the riverside and through the woods'; activities include tennis, golf (on a nine-hole course), croquet and fishing. 'Mr Mifsud is an excellent host, it is rare to hear anything but praise from a fellow guest,' say visitors in 2011. The large lounges have plenty of seating, and are richly furnished with antiques, a grand piano, log fires, fresh floral decorations. Light lunches and afternoon teas are served. The suites in the lodge have a contemporary decor; each has an open-plan sitting room; one is adapted for wheelchair-users. In the main house, bedrooms are decorated in country house style with rich patterned fabrics. Smart casual dress (no jeans) is required in the formal dining room where chef Sean Cullingford serves modern dishes (eg, lamb rump, tomato couscous, aubergine jam, spiced pepper coulis). There are health and beauty treatments in the Kingfisher spa, which has a large swimming pool. (George and Annette Crossley)

  • We have stayed here about 12 times over the past four years. Consistently good. Fabulous setting in lovely grounds with great walks around the lake, along the riverside and through the woods. Small nine-hole golf course which is fun, plus tennis, crouquet and fishing. Spa with a hot tub overlooking the lake, and lovely treatments. Good food and friendly, efficient staff. Comfortable rooms - a lot of which have been refurbished recently to a very high standard.
