The Lake

César award in 1992

A 19th-century hunting and fishing lodge in 'peaceful' surroundings by the River Irfon, this half-timbered building is today a country house and spa retreat offering 'good walks' through woodland and in the countryside. 'The welcoming, friendly staff are highly efficient, the rooms fabulously comfortable,' says one visitor (a Guide hotelier) this year. Bedrooms in the main house are decorated in country house style with rich fabrics and wallpaper; suites in the lodge have a more contemporary decor and an open-plan sitting room. The lounges, with antiques and paintings, have lots of seating on large sofas and armchairs; but a visitor commented on a 'tired' decor. The restaurant serves a daily-changing menu of modern Celtic dishes, eg, ham hock, spring pea and broad bean salad; pavé of sewin, Provençal vegetables, chicory and tomato syrup. There is 'good selection of wines at sensible prices'. Service at mealtimes 'can be slow, making it awkward for small children'. A guest visiting over the holidays found 'Christmas celebrations muted, which we liked'. 'The walk around the lake and down the river is wonderful.' (SK, Annabel Thomas)
  • The staff are always very welcoming, the rooms are fabulously comfortable, and if possible they will upgrade you. The food is generally very good and the service highly efficient whilst still remaining friendly. The situation is beautiful and walk round the lake and down along the river is a gem.

  • We enjoyed it. Good food. Nice rooms. We had some long walks.

  • We have stayed here about 12 times over the past four years. Consistently good. Fabulous setting in lovely grounds with great walks around the lake, along the riverside and through the woods. Small nine-hole golf course which is fun, plus tennis, crouquet and fishing. Spa with a hot tub overlooking the lake, and lovely treatments. Good food and friendly, efficient staff. Comfortable rooms - a lot of which have been refurbished recently to a very high standard.
