The Lake

César award in 1992

In a 'beautiful' rural setting by a lake on the River Irfon, Jean-Pierre Mifsud's country house hotel has a traditional ambience. Built as a sporting lodge, the half-timbered building became the only barium spa resort outside Germany. Kaiser Wilhelm II visited in 1912 (his signature is in the visitors' book). The owner is often found greeting guests in the evening; 'the staff are always welcoming,' said one visitor. Bedrooms in the main house are decorated in country house style with rich patterned fabrics; twelve suites in a new wing, each with an open-plan sitting area, have a more modern look; a room for wheelchair-users has been 'thoughtfully designed'. The three large lounges have plenty of seating, and are furnished with antiques, a grand piano, log fires, fresh floral decorations. In the formal restaurant, Darren Tattersall is now the chef; he serves a four-course dinner menu of modern dishes which might include Jerusalem artichoke bavarois; pork fillet, smoked belly, black pudding, creamed cabbage. A variety of treatments is available in the spa, which has a swimming pool and an outdoor hot tub. The Lake is a member of Pride of Britain hotels.
  • The staff are always very welcoming, the rooms are fabulously comfortable, and if possible they will upgrade you. The food is generally very good and the service highly efficient whilst still remaining friendly. The situation is beautiful and walk round the lake and down along the river is a gem.

  • We enjoyed it. Good food. Nice rooms. We had some long walks.

  • We have stayed here about 12 times over the past four years. Consistently good. Fabulous setting in lovely grounds with great walks around the lake, along the riverside and through the woods. Small nine-hole golf course which is fun, plus tennis, crouquet and fishing. Spa with a hot tub overlooking the lake, and lovely treatments. Good food and friendly, efficient staff. Comfortable rooms - a lot of which have been refurbished recently to a very high standard.
