Carlton Riverside

César award in 1998

In an old spa town at the foot of the Cambrian Mountains, this restaurant-with-rooms has long been run by Mary Ann and Alan Gilchrist, 'warm, welcoming hosts'. The stone house, said to be the second oldest in town, has an 'attractive position' by a bridge on the River Irfon; 'the countryside close by is a draw'. Mrs Gilchrist's cooking 'deserves a special mention': served in the 'simple but elegant' dining room, her dinners might include a goat's cheese and apple soufflé; sweet soy and chilli slow-roast pork belly. Simpler meals (pizzas, burgers, etc) can be taken in the basement bar (though not on Mondays). A small L-shaped lounge has large windows, 'comfortable' seating, a bar and library. The bedrooms vary in size and aspect: the Chapel Room has a dressing table and bedside cabinets with Venetian glass; the Bridge Room overlooks the river; the Oriental Room, 'with no view to speak of', has chinoiserie lacquer furnishings, and a sitting area. The 'satisfactory' breakfasts include 'very good scrambled eggs'. Special diets can be catered for by arrangement. (JM, and others)
  • An interesting one! The room was big, quiet and comfortable but the drainage system was noisy. The food was excellent but service was slow. Breakfast was only available between 9-9.30 and consisted of orange juice, cereal and a full fry up. Quite an eccentric place.
