Durrants

César award in 2010

'A traditional, very British hotel, with extremely friendly people.' New praise comes in 2011 for the Miller family's hotel, a conversion of four Georgian houses north of Oxford Street. It is liked for the 'relaxing and individual atmosphere'. Ian McIntosh is the long-serving manager. The bedrooms vary greatly in style and size: there are handmade beds, antique furnishings and English fabrics. A 'pleasant' room at the front was liked this year. Rooms at the back may be smaller: 'Ours was perfectly OK, with a first-rate bed and a good, refurbished bathroom.' Many rooms, but not all, have air conditioning. Rooms at the front might be noisy with the window open. The George bar, with a coal fire in winter, is 'a perfect place for a pre-theatre aperitif'. Dinner in the 'comfortable', wood-panelled restaurant has generous portions of international dishes, perhaps prawn and crayfish cocktail; seared calf's liver, bacon, mash and onion gravy. A 'good' breakfast is served at table; prices are itemised. Afternoon tea in the Wallace room is 'excellent'. (Wolfgang Stroebe, David Reed)
  • We had an excellent last-minute deal. The staff were very friendly. Our room was smallish, but had everything we needed. We loved the wood-panelled bar and lounge. Breakfast was good.
