The Draycott Hotel - London

'With the atmosphere of a comfortable country house', this small luxury hotel is part of Adrian Gardiner's Mantis group. Composed of three Edwardian houses, each with a fine wooden staircase, it is on a quiet street close to Sloane Square. A warren of corridors and small lifts, it has 'a lived-in, though not at all shabby, feel', say inspectors in 2011. John Hanna manages an 'impeccably behaved staff; every request is rapidly met around the clock'. Bedrooms are named after theatrical characters. 'Our large room, Kean, had a beautifully moulded ceiling, floor-to-ceiling windows with heavy curtains, a sofa facing a gas fire, a desk, table and chairs. Blankets and sheets were provided as we had requested.' There is no background music in the 'charming' lounge where guests are offered complimentary afternoon tea, hot chocolate and champagne. No restaurant: a 24-hour room-service menu is available, and many restaurants are nearby. Breakfast is in a 'small, light room': it has fresh fruits, 'good marmalade, jam and honey in pots; leaf tea, no packages'; hot dishes include eggs cooked to order, a 'nice kipper'.
